Rock removal in urban area with CRAS

The project presented in this report combines two characteristics that make it especially suitable for CRAS, the non-explosive demolition cement manufactured by the Basque firm Kayati SL. This is a demolition work that had to be carried out in the centre of the city, an urban stage in a hilly area.

The goal of the demolition was to gain volume between buildings in the urban area of mountain town, which would allow a gain of buildable space, something scarce in the area due to its orography, thus providing great value for the final customer.
As the images show, the use of explosives to carry out this work was totally out of consideration. The construction site was located downtown, with a sidewalk and road a few meters away and with neighbouring houses. In addition to the inconvenience that roadblocks, noise and vibrations could cause to neighbours, the use of explosives would have generated dangerous projections of debris, and would have had unwanted effects on the structure of surrounding buildings.
The way how demolitions are executed with CRAS meets perfectly the requirements of this type of situation. First of all, it is not necessary to ask for any type of administrative permit related to the use of explosives. Nor is it necessary the use of heavy machinery.
The process begins with the drilling of the rock to be demolished. In this case, a 63 mm drill bit was used to drill 3 meters deep, distributed according to the CRAS manufacturer's instructions. Mortar made with CRAS Yellow, one of the versions of this product, was poured into these holes.

After 48 hours of the CRAS pouring, there was a break in the rock, which was reduced to debris -easily removable- in the next hours. After removal, the result was the creation of some valuable buildable square meters in the area.

This project is one more example of how the CRAS eases demolition works and becomes an essential ally for building professionals when it comes to carrying out demolitions where explosives cannot be used.
